ENGINE AS A WEAPON II
5-6 December 2006
London, UK
This event is a two day International Symposium that aims to further identify and explore the challenges for integration of future high energy combat equipment into maritime platforms. With Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP) providing a key enabler for future electric weapon and sensor systems there is an increasing need to raise awareness and understanding in both the weapons and marine systems communities of their interdependencies and impacts. Themes include:
ASNE is pleased to co-sponsor this symposium with IMarEST. A Call for Papers is out and synopses are due 21 April 2006. If you are interested in submitting papers to this conference please see the additional information located here: www.navalengineers.org/Events/documents/EAAW06Call4Paper2006.pdf.

Interested in Graduate Level Ship Design Program?
NAVSEA has created a Summer Naval Surface Ship Design Program in cooperation with the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan. The program will run from May 1 to June 16, 2006 and will include professors from the University of Michigan, the Naval Post Graduate School, Virginia Tech and instructors from NAVSEA’s Engineering Future Concepts and Surface Ship Design, Ship Costing, and Combat Systems Groups. To read the official NAVSEA Press Release, please click here.
The course will be limited to no more than 30 students on first come basis. Candidates for the course can come from a variety of disciplines including: naval architecture, marine engineering, systems engineering, mechanical engineering and civil engineering. Students who complete the course will have an opportunity to participate in paid internship programs. Students seeking more information or interested in applying for the program can contact Kristine Wielopoliski at the University of Michigan at SNSSD@umich.edu or go to the website at www.umich.edu/~snssdp.

Encourage your colleagues to join ASNE
…it’s a rewarding opportunity!
Recruit two new paying members in 2006 and receive a free copy of either Naval Engineering & American Seapower or Marine Casualty Response: Salvage Engineering
Why should you recruit?
You are the greatest testimony to the benefit of an ASNE membership, and by sharing the value with your colleagues, staff and business partners, you will...
To take part in ASNE’s 2006 Recruit-a-Member Program, have the candidate enter your name in the “recommending member” box of the application. We’ll do the rest! Thank you for supporting your American Society of Naval Engineers!

Electronic Ballots
This year voting for ASNE National offices is being conducted by electronic ballot. If ASNE has your current e-mail address you should have receivied an e-mail to vote. Members without e-mail addresses will receive a post card reminder. Members who prefer a paper ballot will have the opportunity to request one. Please do your duty and help to elect the new incoming ASNE leadership.

Volunteers Are Needed
What make ASNE so strong and special are the dedicated volunteers that put in all of the necessary hours to make sure things happen as they need to be accomplished. Everyone is very busy but if you can donate even a small amount of your time to ASNE, it will benefit everyone. Please consider volunteering at either the Section/Chapter level or National in whatever capacity you think you have the time, skill and dedication to contribute. The staff at National are here to assist in any way they can but many dedicated volunteers are needed to make things run smoother and to do much of the efforts that benefit Society members and the Nation.
For Naval Engineering to remain a strong and vibrant profession, we will need volunteers to advise and mentor students, foster naval engineering as a career path, develop ASNE programs and help coordinate events, programs and committees. There are so many other things that need to be done and worked on that we will find a good match for you if you can help volunteer some time.
Please volunteer with your Section officers (locate them at http://www.navalengineers.org/Sections/Sections.html) or call National at (703) 836-6727 and let us know what your interests are and where you would like to help. One particular area needing volunteers is the Journal Committee where a wide range of engineering experience and specialties are needed to peer review papers. With an adequate number of volunteers, the workload is relatively light, but ver rewarding. Please contact Cliff Witcomb, e-mail c.whitcomb@uno.edu, if you are interested in serving on the Journal Committee. Other Committee Chairs can be contacted by e-mail – for a list of them, click here. Thank you for supporting your Society!

Steam: The Untold Story of America’s First Great Invention written by Andrea Sutcliffe published by Palgrave Macmillan, St. Martins Press in 2004.
Book reviewed by Steve Cohen, USCG:
“If you think Robert Fulton invented of the first steam boat, think again. STEAM is a wonderful history of technology, legal disputes, personalities, politics, perseverance, ambition, and chance encounters involving the development of the steam boat. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read for anyone interested in the history of technology. For steam buffs this is a must read. Ms Sutcliffe brings to life in methodical historical detail the contributions of John Fitch and James Rummy and many other lesser know individuals who fathered the first steam boat. Historical luminaries, skeptics and scoundrels abound through out this fascinating historical account. Covering nearly three decades from 1794, the book is a tale of invention and inventors and the daunting challenges they faced. Read this book and if you still think Robert Fulton invented the steam boat, I have a bridge to sell you.” Steve Cohen, USCG

Please welcome our most recent Gold Corporate Supporter, General Atomics.
General Atomics was conceived in 1955 at San Diego, California for the purpose of harnessing the power of nuclear technologies for the benefit of mankind. General Atomics’ basic research into fission and fusion has matured into competence in many technologies, making GA and its affiliated companies one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely operated surveillance aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.
We are grateful to General Atomics and our other corporate supporters for their ongoing commitment to ASNE and the naval engineering profession. For a listing of ASNE's other corporate supporters, please visit: http://www.navalengineers.org/Programs/corpsup.html.

Keep Your Membership Up-to-Date
Every month ASNE loses members. I mean that literally. After some period of membership, their mail suddenly is returned marked “Moved – Forwarding Order Expired.” When I go to the individual’s membership record I find in far too many cases no alternate means of contact. The record may indicate a home address change from one coast to the other two years ago, but the work address and phone numbers were never corrected; and email addresses seem to change faster than phone numbers. Rather than continue to send mail to an address that is no longer valid, I have no choice but to terminate the membership and change the status to “Lost.” That has even happened within three months of renewing a membership – and in a few cases within three months of joining ASNE. Most address changes are received from the Post Office. After every issue of Naval Engineers Journal is mailed I will receive more than 50 notices of address changes. However, the Journal itself winds up in the trash. Third class mail is not forwarded, and ASNE pays 70¢ each just to get the mailing label returned with the forwarding address. While that takes care of future mail, it does nothing for phone numbers or any of the other contact information. Every issue of the NEJ includes a change of address form, and every Post Office can provide their standard change of address card. Sending me an email works just fine, but please include phone numbers, both home and work. And now you can update all of the contact information in your member profile online, at any time, through Members Only on the ASNE website. Every dues renewal notice since August has included the information necessary to log in and update your record. By this spring, we hope to include an actual membership card with your login name and password. Keeping the information in your record up-to-date has always been an individual responsibility. Online access should be the best tool yet to help you do just that.
