CALLS FOR PAPERS & PRESENTATIONS
Fuel Tank to Target: Building the Electric Fighting Ship is the theme for ASNE Day 2007, scheduled for 25-26 June 2007 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City. The Call for Papers is posted on the ASNE web site with response requested by 30 September 2006. The program will explore the full spectrum of issues involved with integrating high powered electric weapons into modern warships both during initial construction and through back-fit. A closely related concern is whether development and deployment of electric weapons will be affected by the affordability imperatives that are dominating future force considerations and the associated mandate to stabilize requirements. Please take a look at the call for papers and consider contributing to this dialogue.
Another event seeking proposals is the Fleet Readiness Symposium to be held in Atlantic Beach, Florida on 12-13 February 2007. Check out the Call for Presentations with response due by 15 October 2006. The committee is seeking proposals on improvements in methods, tolls and technologies across a broad spectrum of topics related to Fleet readiness.
There is a Mini Combat Systems Symposium scheduled for 17-18 May 2007 in Chincoteague/Wallops Island, Virginia with a Call for Papers/Presentations issued requesting abstracts by 15 December 2006. The theme is “Enterprise T&E – Adding Efficiency and Effectiveness to Meet the Requirements of the 21st Century.”
ASNE is always interested in receiving technical papers or articles for publication in the Naval Engineers Journal (NEJ), and there are always a variety of calls available for you to write a paper or give a presentation at one of our upcoming events. Please check listings periodically at the bottom of our home page at www.navalengineers.org or under the specific events listed the meetings and events page, or watch for announcements in the Naval Engineers Journal.
UPCOMING ASNE EVENT:
The next major ASNE event is the Advanced Naval Propulsion Symposium on 30-31 October 2006 at the beautiful new Westin Arlington Gateway (Ballston). The event will begin with remarks by RADM William E. Landay, USN Chief of Naval Research (ONR) and a keynote address by The Honorable Delores M. Etter, ASN (RDA). The symposium will include a panel discussion on Maintenance Considerations for Future Propulsion Systems with RADM Kevin McCoy, USN (SEA 05); RADM Dale Gabel, USCG, Deputy Commandant for Engineering and Logistics; and RADM Mark A. Hugel, USN (SEA 04); and moderated by Dr. William Luebke. The luncheon speakers are RDML Charles Goddard, USN (Vice Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command) and RADM Charles Hamilton, USN (PEO Ships). A gala reception on October 30th will include a brief discussion on the Congressional view of future naval propulsion by Ron O’Rourke from Congressional Research Service, entertainment provided by the Chanteyman (band) and a sampling of food and wine from several different countries with a wine expert available to discuss the wine selections. The symposium also includes a solid program of technical papers on a wide variety of naval propulsion topics. This promises to be an exceptional event. For additional details and information on hotel and registration, go to: http://www.navalengineers.org/Events/AdvancedNavalPropulsion2006.html
We are also accepting sponsorships and exhibitors for this event. Please contact Megan Sinesiou or see the Exhibitor/Sponsor opportunities at the above link.

ASNE is a volunteer organization and we are highly dependent on active volunteer participation to support many key Society activities. Serving ASNE as a volunteer is a great way to give something back to your profession while enhancing your knowledge of naval engineering and building a strong network with others who share your professional interests. There are a variety of ways to get involved. You can help out with your local Chapter or Section or participate in planning a symposium or other event join one of ASNE’s important committees such as the Journal Committee, the Programs Committee or the Membership Committee. You can also volunteer to contribute a paper or presentation for the Naval Engineers Journal or one of our symposia. Whatever your interest, there is a way to contribute and your help is needed. Please consider volunteering to help your Society. ASNE has also formed a strategic alliance with SNAME in regards to their Technical & Research Program. That allows ASNE members to join one of the many technical panels or committees that are involved in a variety of focused technical projects. Watch for more information on this opportunity in the near future. If you have any questions or would like assistance in determining where you can help out best, please contact your Section chair or call ASNE’s National office at 703-636-6727 or e-mail us at asnehq@navalengineers.org. We are here for you and hope you are willing to step forward – your Society needs you. Coming soon on our website is a place for volunteers to come to find out where they can help out.
