RE:  2007 - 2008 ASNE Scholarship Program

Dear ASNE Member:

As the ASNE Scholarship Program enters its 2007-2008 "scholarship season", all members are reminded that this is the time to identify young men and women with an interest in the field of naval engineering who are potential candidates for ASNE Scholarships.  Please note that scholarships will be awarded to students for the last year of an undergraduate program or for one year of a graduate program. Application forms can be downloaded from our web site at www.navalengineers.org under “Scholarships”.

The purpose of the ASNE Scholarship Program is to improve the profession of naval engineering by:

  1. Encouraging college students to enter the field of naval engineering.
  2. Providing support to naval engineers seeking advanced education in the field.
  3. Providing ASNE members and industry sponsors with an opportunity to contribute to a worthy endeavor.

Since the program was inaugurated in 1979, 421 ASNE scholarships have been awarded.  For academic year 2006-2007, ASNE Scholarships awards are supporting 16 undergraduate students ($2,500 per year) and 5 graduate students ($3,500 per year).  The award for the 2007-2008 academic year has increased to $3,000 for undergraduates and $4,000 for graduate students.

Annual contributions from individual members of ASNE, annual corporate contributions and funds, Section symposia proceeds, and investment income from the scholarship fund support these scholarships. The scholarship award may be used for payment of tuition, fees, and expenses. Applicants must:

  1. Be applying for support for either the last year of a full-time (or co-op) undergraduate program or for one year of a graduate program leading to an engineering or physical science degree at an accredited college or university. Individuals who already hold a relevant graduate degree are not eligible.
  2. Be an US citizen.
  3. Demonstrate or express a genuine interest in a career in naval engineering, e.g. a student membership in a professional engineering society, extra-curricular engineering activities, etc.
  4. Graduate student applicants must be members of ASNE.

Selection criteria will be based on the candidate's academic record, work history, professional promise and interest in naval engineering, extracurricular activities, and recommendations of college faculty, employers, and other character references. Financial need may also be considered.

The next awards will be for the college year starting in the fall of 2007. Applications are due by close of business on16 February 2007. The ASNE Scholarship Committee will complete the selection process to make the announcement of the awards in early May. All applicants will be notified by letter. When appropriate, the award may be made at an ASNE Section meeting. The award will be in the form of a check for the first academic period, payable jointly to the awardee and the college or university the student will attend. The letter will require the awardee to forward the check to the college or university and to furnish transcripts showing satisfactory performance to the Society as a basis for the second increment of the award for the next academic period. The letter will further require that in the event that the awardee withdraws from their academic program with a tuition refund, the Society will receive a proportionate share of the refund.  As a further means of encouraging interest in a career in naval engineering, all ASNE Scholars and Alternates are awarded one-year honorary student memberships.

So if you know of a student that should consider a scholarship please make sure they are aware of ASNE’s Scholarship Program.
