…it’s all about Small Boats!

ASNE Weekly Newsletter

If you were in ASNE Headquarters this week you would have heard quite a bit of buzz about small boats as we are excitedly planning the Multi-Agency Craft Conference at the United States Coast Guard Yard June 8-9 with keynotes from RADM Bruce Baffer, RDML Michael Haycock, and CAPT Austin Gould. Our affection for small craft goes beyond MACC, with notables including the upcoming Tidewater Ultimate Build-a-Boat Contest and Launch and Recovery Symposium.  Below we even share a few event listings from related organizations that are on our small craft radar and should be on yours as well.

Check out this participating exhibitor in-water demo at MACC! Ocean Craft Marine tells us they’ll be bringing this boat!

Multi-Agency Craft Conference (MACC)

June 8-9, 2016

United States Coast Guard Yard, Baltimore, MD

MACC is BACK! The theme for MACC is ‘All About Boats’ and will explore the latest technology in small craft design, acquisition, and operations.  U.S. Army and Navy service craft, Navy and Coast Guard patrol boats, Navy and USMC expeditionary craft, and Naval Special Warfare craft are highlighted in chaired technical presentations, vendor and agency displays, and in-water demonstrations. The event will also feature a 17,000 square foot exhibit hall and information on new technologies and product offerings.

ASNE Tidewater Section, 22nd Annual ASNE-Sika Ultimate Build-A-Boat Challenge
June 11-12, 2016
Town Point Park, Norfolk, VA
The 22nd Annual ASNE-Sika Ultimate Build-A-Boat Challenge (aka: “Quick-n-Dirty Boatbuilding”) as part of Norfolk Harborfest, is a 2 day event, of up to 20 two-person teams, made up of students, industry leaders and community members that compete to design, create and build a quick seaworthy boat that will then be raced on Sunday, June 12th. The net proceeds from this event directly fund ASNE Engineering Scholarships and STEM Grants. If you are interested in participating, please contact Michael D’Amato: michael.damato@hii-amsec.com.

Ship Seakeeping and Small Boat Dynamics Course

November 15, 2016

MITAGS, Linthicum Heights, MD

In conjunction with the Launch and Recovery Symposium, Ship Seakeeping and Small Boat Dynamics course focuses on what you need to know about ship motions in a seaway, with particular emphasis on the impact on launch and recovery operations. Email education@navalengineers.org for more information. The course will cover the following:

  • Response of the "mother ship" in waves; effect of speed, heading, sea state
  • Ship stern motions and ramp/well dynamics related to stern launch and recovery
  • Dynamics of small boats approaching a ship and lying alongside in waves
  • Small boat dynamics in the wake of a ship
  • Ship and boat operating strategies for launch and recovery
  • Available analysis tools for this subject area and their limitations

Launch & Recovery Symposium

November 16-17, 2016

MITAGS, Linthicum Heights, MD

L&R is HERE! This symposium addresses the launch, recovery, and operations of manned and unmanned vehicles from marine platforms, and is quite broad to include helicopters, rotorcraft, fixed-wing aircraft, RHIBs, high-speed craft, tenders, UAVs, USVs, UUVs, etc. This year’s theme represents our increased focus on operations: "Operational Lessons Learned and Designing for Safe and Effective Operability, Regulatory Conformance, and Affordability.”

ASNE Volunteer Spotlight

In recognition of National Volunteer Week, April 10-16, we are spotlighting CDR Charlie Pfeifer, USN (Ret.), an exceptional volunteer leader to our Ways and Means Committee and dedicated member to the Society.  We recognize and appreciate his true efforts in helping us serve the naval engineering community.  Charlie also contributed a terrific summary about the committee, with support from Ways and Means staff liaison Nancy Lackey.

CDR Charlie Pfeifer, USN (Ret.) Chair, Ways and Means Committee

Why did you decide to become a volunteer for ASNE?
I first became a volunteer for ASNE in 1987 at the section level when my boss, who was the Section Program Committee chairman at the time, asked me to help him.  I found that it was a lot of fun, gave me great exposure and job satisfaction.  It’s been a slippery slope ever since.

What do you like best about serving on the W&M committee?

Working with the staff, society officers, council, and the rest of the committee to keep the society in the strongest possible financial condition.

Do you have any advice for someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?
When it comes to volunteering, find the things that you like to do and that bring satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment and then jump in and get started.  The more you put into something, the more you get out of it.  I think that ASNE fills a vital need for the Navy by offering a non-confrontational forum for exchange of ideas between active duty civil service and private sector personnel.  Symposia also provide an opportunity for both Government and Private Sector organizations to showcase what they are doing.

What do you do in your spare time – hobby, interests, etc.?
Our Church family is very important to us including supporting the Episcopal Campus Ministry at ODU.  I am also very involved with my Norfolk Sunrise Rotary Club.  Now that I am fully retired, i.e., don’t get paid, it is time to give back.  We have been so blessed just to live in this country.  Our goal is to take some kind of a trip once a quarter.  We love to cruise; we spend a couple of weeks a year in Georgian Bay, Ontario and have a time share in the French Quarter of New Orleans.  Although we don’t gamble, we like to just see the sights and shows in Las Vegas every year or two.  The best way to stay young is to stay both mentally and physically busy.

Thank you so very much for your hard work and dedication to ASNE. Without the contributions of volunteer time and expertise, ASNE simply could not provide timely and valuable information, a sense of community, and networking opportunities. Make your commitment to volunteer with us.

Together, we can accomplish many things to move the naval engineering profession forward. And what a better time than this week – National Volunteers Week!
