ASNE Weekly Newsletter

May 5, 2016

“…with the advent of the armor-clad vessel, there had gone, and gone forever, the crew lines, the buntlines, the reef-tackles and the jib halliards of the age of sail…the seas of snowy canvas and the forest of yards and masts which had been the pride and glory of the sailor of a previous generation, and about which so much folk-lore and romance had been weaved, such inspiring songs composed, and so much history written, had passed away forever, but with their passing, there had come a class of fighting ships which more than ever before would give control of the world to the nation that controlled the sea.” John R. Edwards, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy,Journal of the American Society of Naval Engineers, August 1914, as quoted inASNE: The First 100 Yearsby CDR Bruce I. Meader, USN (Ret.)
As we enter May and celebrate Military Appreciation Month, we thank those who have served our country, many of whom have been ASNE founders, volunteers, leaders, and members over the past 128 years. Additionally, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our civilian members who support the sea services. Thank you for your service! - Leigh McCue, ASNE Executive Director

ASNE Member of the Month

Patrick Violante, Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division (NSWCPD), Advanced Machinery Systems Integration Branch

Patrick is the ASNE Delaware Valley membership chair and all-around great guy.He was part of the team that championed an ASNE student chapter at Rowan University, and attends their meetings regularly. He routinely brings guest speakers to Rowan to meet with the students. The speakers give the students an overview of their engineering projects, as well as answer their questions about naval engineering and career development. He contributes to numerous outreach events, and inspires countless students to learn about STEM subjects through one-on-one interactions. He routinely volunteers to help with new programs within the section and strives to make a difference in the naval engineering community. He recently led a team that sponsored Delaware Valley's first Speed Mentoring event. This event promoted the benefits of mentorship, camaraderie, and helped eight mentees shape their career by meeting with senior engineers and management.

1. What got you into naval engineering? (What specific event or moment?)
Grandfather was a Marine and my father was in the Air Force, so I always had an affinity towards the military. My internship experience before I entered graduate school sparked my interest in a career doing research and development work for the Navy. There wasn't a specific event or moment for me, though.

2. What is a fun fact most people don't know about you?
My love for animals probably outweighs my love for most people.

3.What engineer, scientist, or mathematician, dead or alive, would you like to meet?
I'd love nothing more than to have a chance to meet my dear friend, gifted mathematician, and former ASNE member, Dr. Kimberly Drake, again.

4. If you could engineer your perfect concession stand/food truck, what would it be?
Since a lot of my research is in this area, I'd love to see a 3D printing food truck, where you have no limits on what is available and the food is printed on-demand as it is ordered.

Thanks, Patrick for all of your hard work and dedication to ASNE!
