Dr. Zareh Soghomonian, Senior Engineer
HII Newport News Shipbuilding
Dr. Zareh Soghomonian has been behind the scenes directly contributing to the success of the special events, ASNE Combat Systems, and ASNE Day events, as well as planning for those events through participation in the ASNE Flagship Council meetings.

What got you into naval engineering?
Having worked on future combat systems and various other Integrated Power Train systems as well as hybrid traction and propulsions systems, I started to apply my expertise to Megawatt Power systems. I supported the design, development and implementation of the Integrated Fight-Through Power (IFTP) zonal power distribution system on DDG-1000, then worked on various other programs such as the 36.5 MW superconducting Homopolar motor; 40 MW interleaved DC drive; 2.8 MW axial, radial, and transverse flux machines.

What is a fun fact most people don't know about you?
I lend my pro audio/video expertise to various community events (all pro bono), which involves the design, development, and engineering of different audio/video and system hardware and software. I also do a lot of charity work for our community as well as web development and IT support for our church. I’m an avid bicyclist; enjoy playing soccer with my son and watching Tour de France F1 Grand Prix, and World Cup soccer with my son.

Who are a few of your most admired engineers/scientists/mathematicians, dead or alive, would you like to meet?
Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, Prof. Steven Hawkins, Leonardo di Vinci, Enzo Ferrari, Maurizio Arrivabene (Ferrari F1 Team), Ettore Bugatti

If you could engineer your perfect concession stand/food truck, what would it be?
RFID based mobile library with Guinness beer on the tap.

Webinar: Six Reasons Why the Shipbuilding Industry is Challenging
June 28, 2016
Number of PDHs: 1
Course Description: Compared to other well-known industries, the shipbuilding and ship repair industry (both domestically and internationally) is subject to fluctuations in operational performance and employment stability. These fluctuations are caused by a combination of structural considerations unique to this industry, and create a business risk profile that extends to expectations (and outcomes) for both customers and owners/shareholders. This course identifies the six (6) reasons that (taken collectively) drive this industry dynamic, and make shipbuilding and ship repair uniquely challenged amongst all major world industries.
Takeaways:
  • How the shipbuilding and ship repair industry product, market, operations and capital structure compares to other well-known industries.
  • The six reasons why the shipbuilding and ship repair industry is unique in terms of operational risk profile versus performance results.
  • The unique role of governments (domestic and international) in the industry.
Enrollment Fee:
Member - Complimentary
Non-Member $50
