ASNE Weekly Newsletter

MegaRust 2016

This newsletter comes to you live from MegaRust 2016, and as you can see from the picture at left of symposium chair John Mangano with International Paint we're knee deep in corrosion protection. For me (Executive Director Leigh McCue), one of the most striking things about MegaRust is the unique combination of rigorous technical content with get-your-hands-dirty demonstrations. Having attended many conferences, by many organizations and societies, the level of mission-oriented, technically-excellent, practicality makes for a refreshing and vibrant symposium experience. Event highlights included Corrosion Control "Jeopardy" (photo below left - "What is blistering?"), live demonstrations (photo below center), and outstanding keynotes and panels (Aviation In-Service Perspectives Panel photo below right). Pictured at right is MegaRust attendee, San Diego State University student, and ASNE Scholarship Recipient Peter Dowling.

"It's an outstanding event." - Mac McKenna, USAF Corrosion Office
"MegaRust in San Diego is truly an excellent forum for membership to meet Naval Port Engineers, Shipyards, and other Regional locations working in the Naval Community." - Roger Chouinard, Munters Corporation

Awards

Did you know ASNE presents awards throughout the year? In addition to our Annual Awards, ASNE also honors students through the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the MIT Brand Award, and the SOSMRC Top Snipe Award. This past week, ASNE President RADM Tony Lengerich, USN (Ret.) presented Mr. Thad Bell ASNE's Saunders Award for lifetime achievement in a special ceremony (picture below left). A few weeks earlier, CAPT Rick White, USN (Ret.) presented MIDN Jessica Rodriguez the ASNE Award at the USNA (picture below center, with Dean Phillips) and RADM Dale Gabel, USCG (Ret.) presented Ensign Abigail Isaacs the ASNE Award at the USCGA (picture below right, with RADM Jim Rendon). Congratulations all around for those who have given a lifetime of service and to those who are our brightest future leaders. Help us honor your colleagues and mentors, nominate someone for an ASNE Award today.

Build-a-Boat

June 11-12, the ASNE Tidewater Section held their annual ASNE-Sikaflex Challenge Ultimate Build-a-Boat Contest. This event provides a fun avenue for two-person teams to showcase their design, construction, and testing abilities. Build-a-Boat is the product of hard work invested by dedicated volunteers led by Mike D'Amato from ASNE's Tidewater Section, the same section that is bringing you the 2016 Fleet Maintenance and Modernization Symposium, September 12-15 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center in Hampton, VA.
