Arctic Day
“The Arctic is going to be a different kind of a theater in the future, and if we neglect the fact that we’re going to be operating in the Arctic as we design this new class of ship, that’s just narrow thinking on our part,” ADM John Richardson as quoted in USNI News.

Inspired by growing Coast Guard and Navy interest in designing for Arctic environments, ASNE is hosting this one-day event focusing on polar class vessel design, equipping, and operation. Arctic Day will be at FHI 360 in Washington DC on November 2, 2016. Planned speakers include:

  • RADM Bruce Baffer, Assistant Commandant for Engineering & Logistics, US Coast Guard
  • Jim Webster, NAVSEA 05
  • RDML Michael Haycock, Director of Acquisition Programs and Program Executive Officer, US Coast Guard
  • NAVSEA Arctic Working Group and RDML Lorin Selby
  • USCG Ship Design Team

Registration and exhibit/sponsorship opportunities are limited, available on a first-come first-serve basis. For more information, please refer to: http://www.navalengineers.org/Symposia/Arctic-Day-2016.

Awards

Each year the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) celebrates excellence in our profession by recognizing individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in one or more facets of naval engineering. The prestigious ASNE Annual Awards Program honors professionals engaged in any of the many aspects of naval engineering, including government employees, members of the uniformed services, and those employed in the defense industry, in academia, or elsewhere in the private sector. We are seeking your help in identifying and nominating qualified candidates for the awards that are described.

Nominations are sought for the following 2016 ASNE Awards, which are presented in 2017:

For more details, see past recipients and their citations, or to submit a nomination; please visit our website ASNE-Awards. The deadline for submission is October 21, 2016. Please review our Nomination Guidelines and Format Guidance.

Awards Eligibility Requirements
Any U.S. citizen engaged in any of the many aspects of naval engineering may be considered for these awards including government employees, members of the uniformed services, and those employed in the defense industry, in academia, or elsewhere in the private sector. Nominations may be submitted by any individual or organization having knowledge of the qualifications of the individual nominated. The same person may be nominated for more than one award, but that person may not receive more than one award in the same year. Previous nominations will be reconsidered by the Awards Committee one year following initial submission. ASNE Awards for 2016 will be presented during Technology, Systems and Ships (TSS)/ASNE Day 2017 or at another ASNE event in 2017.

Intelligent Ships

The Intelligent Ships Symposium (ISS) call for papers deadline is November 4th.
