CITATION:
Dr. Albert Nuttall is a pioneer in the field of statistical communications theory who has distinguished himself as one of the world's most prolific contributors to the solution of fundamental analytic problems in the signal processing of underwater acoustic signals. His work has extended existing theoretical foundations to include effects that were previously ignored or considered too difficult to treat analytically. As a result, he has produced several breakthroughs in previous limitations on sonar systems performance, especially in the detection and classification of noise contaminated signals.
Dr. Nuttall has undertaken challenges of substantial scope and complexity in previously unexplored or unyielding areas of signal processing. His creativity, perseverance and sound reasoning have enabled him to choose the correct blend of analysis, simulation and experiment to make important, original contributions to the knowledge in key areas such as the performance of signal processors in the presence of fading, noise and interference.
These notable achievements add to a long and distinguished record of research,
development and publication in the field of signal processing, spectral analysis,
system performance evaluation, and statistical communication theory. Dr. Albert
Nuttall is truly most deserving of the ASNE Solberg Award for 2001.
