CITATION:

The paper "Designing Navy Hull Forms for Fuel Economy" was published in the Naval Engineers Journal, Spring 2004 edition. This paper addresses the need to evaluate hull form in the early stage of design to determine its impact on fuel consumption. The paper develops a new design metric, called the resistance coefficient and denoted CPE, for evaluating the resistance of any hull form design. Using a CPE database developed from historic model test data stored in the U.S. Navy Hull Design Database System (HDDS), CPE compares hull form resistance to similar Taylor Standard Series hull forms. A new optimization program is introduced and applied to demonstrate potential hull form improvement and resulting cost savings. This paper provides engineers with the metric and tools to design energy efficient hull forms meeting a need to conserve energy particularly with rising fuel costs.

This paper captures the essence of designing hull forms for fuel efficiency. It is definitely in keeping with the high technical standards of the Naval Engineers Journal. The authors are most deserving of the Society's 2004 "Jimmie" Hamilton Award.
