RADM David P. Sargent, Jr., USN (Ret.) (right), presents the Frank G. Law Award to Sally Skolnick

CITATION:

Mrs. Sara Skolnick has been an active and contributing member of ASNE's leadership for nearly twenty-five years. She has given the Society nearly a decade of exceptional volunteer service in a variety of key roles in addition to her years of dedicated service as a vital member of the ASNE staff. She has helped materially and substantially to advance the Society's principal objectives, to enhance the Society's professional stature and to improve Society operations.

One of Mrs. Skolnick's most significant volunteer accomplishments is her leadership of the ASNE History Committee and her extraordinary service as Managing Editor of the second edition of the Society's landmark publication, Naval Engineering and American Sea Power. She devoted many months of dedicated effort to managing all aspects of the publication including coordination with the Editor and nineteen contributing authors, interface with many reviewers, assembly and copyediting of content, and management of the publishing contract. Her efforts were instrumental in transforming a cold war era historical narrative into a current and relevant compendium with significant reference value. She has also contributed to strengthening the Society's scholarship program, assisted the Membership Committee in establishing a charter and developing and promulgating a membership strategy, and participated in several other key ASNE committees. She has long advocated effective cooperation with other organizations and when the Council initiated a focused look at potential strategic alliances she eagerly volunteered to join the ad hoc committee. Subsequently, she took a leading role in the joint strategic alliance committee with the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and has contributed substantially to the committee's effective progress while also keeping the Council properly informed of the status.

Mrs. Skolnick's service to ASNE is characterized by exceptional dedication, incisive analysis, rigorous attention to detail and a relentless pursuit of innovative improvement. She has been a consistent voice for change and for broadening the Society's perspective on service to the naval engineering community. She has made a real and substantial difference in the quality and effectiveness of the Society's operations and she is truly deserving of the American Society of Naval Engineers Frank G. Law Award for 2004.
