ASNE & SNAME Continuing Education Program Presents Shipbuilding Best Practices Thomas Lamb Emeritus Research Scientist and Adjunct Professor University of Michigan
ABSTRACT This course presents a summary of shipbuilding best practices prepared by Thomas Lamb based on his visits to over 30 shipyards in Europe and Asia during the past 15 years. The contents and course schedule follow:
0900 - 0915 Introduction 0915 - 0945 Major Shipbuilding Developments 0945 - 1015 Characteristics of Successful World Class Shipyards 1015 - 1030 BREAK 1030 - 1100 Video – Sanoyas Mizushima Shipyard 1100 - 1130 Modern Shipbuilding Practice – Hull Production 1130 - 1200 Video – IMG Shipbuilding Equipment 1200 - 1300 LUNCH 1300 - 1330 Modern Shipbuilding Practice – Outfitting 1330 - 1400 Erection and Launching Methods 1400 - 1415 BREAK 1415 - 1445 Naval Shipbuilding Practices 1445 - 1530 Shipbuilding Productivity 1530 - 1600 EXERCISE 1 – Productivity Improvement 1600 - 1650 Shipyard Layout 1650 - 1700 EXERCISE 2 – Shipyard Design
The major focus is on commercial shipbuilding but naval shipbuilding best practices will also be considered. Student exercises will focus on 1) determining the benefits from application of different shipbuilding practices and 2) Basic Design of a Shipyard.
