Environmental Quality Division Tour
The Environmental Quality Division (EQ) provides the full spectrum expertise and facilities to design and engineer military mission compatible, efficient and cost effective shipboard environmental materials, processes and systems, which minimize waste generation, eliminate the use of harmful chemicals, and destroy or appropriately manage wastes on board ship for disposal in accordance with applicable environmental regulations. EQ supports all U.S. Navy ships, submarines, craft and vehicles, and related shore activities. EQ was established to provide processes and systems that meet the unique requirements of the warship environment (e.g. space, weight, stealth, noise, shock, logistics, manning, etc.) while still complying with the high environmental standards set forth in domestic and foreign laws and regulations. In addition to in-house development, EQ adapts and integrates, considering all aspects of Human Systems Engineering, the latest commercial and university developed technologies and products into environmental systems for today’s ships and those of the future. EQ supports new acquisition programs so that environmental regulations and pollution controls are considered for the design, construction, operation and eventual disposal of the Navy vehicle or system. EQ ensures that Navy forces and activities can continue to train and perform their missions worldwide – without constraints imposed by environmental laws/regulations. This includes the ability to conduct transits of foreign territorial waters and use of domestic and foreign port facilities.
The Environmental Quality Laboratory is located in the Ship Materials Technology Center at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division in West Bethesda, Maryland. The site is located, to the west of the DC, within 20 minutes of Washington Mall. During the open house you will be able to see the facilities used for the research, development, test and evaluation of materials, processes, and systems leading to full compliance with regional, national and international environmental regulatory requirements. These facilities supports the full spectrum from the bench top and pilot-size technology demonstrations to the test and evaluation of full-scale waste treatment systems for processing non-oily and oily waste fluids, solid, plastics, medical and hazardous materials waste disposal, and thermal destruction hardware and systems. The facility is capable of evaluating systems, with controlled inputs for performance, reliability, operability and maintainability within mock-ups of ship spaces prior to Fleet-wide deployment.
This is a controlled admission site. All visitors must be US citizens and we must have a list of all potential visitors 10 days before the open house. All visitors must bring positive identification. Cameras, computers, cell phones with cameras and any other recording devices are not allowed within the gate.
