Chair
CAPT Matthew S. von Ruden, USCG

Matt graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1986. His afloat tours included engineering assignments in USCGC VENTUROUS (WMEC 625), USCGC MIDGETT (WHEC 726), and USCGC TAHOMA (WMEC 908), Executive Officer in USCGC MUNRO (WHEC 724) and Commanding Officer of USCGC CAMPBELL (WMEC 909). In his two previous tours at the MLC Pacific's Naval Engineering Division, he served in the Specifications Branch, and in the Support Branch as the AtoN Section Chief. He also served as Executive Officer, Naval Engineering Support Unit Seattle. Matt earned MS degrees in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering from MIT, and an MA in National Security and Strategic Studies from the United States Naval War College. He assumed the role of Chief, Naval Engineering Division, Maintenance & Logistics Command Pacific on 31 May 2007.

Vice Chair
LT Kenneth J. Burgess, USCG

Ken graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 2003 with a B.S. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. His first tour was aboard the USCGC MELLON (WHEC 717) as an engineering division officer. Following his time in Seattle he spent two years at the University of Michigan earning an M.Eng degree in Concurrent Marine Design and an M.S.E in Industrial & Operations Engineering. Currently, Ken works at the Maintenance & Logistics Command Pacific supporting the polar icebreaking cutters.

Gary Thompson

Prior to starting his own consulting firm, Tomales Bay Marine Design, Gary worked in the maritime industry for more than 37 years, 27 of which were with M. Rosenblatt & Son, where he was the Western Division Manager. Prior to joining MR&S, he worked in the Design Division of Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. He is a past chairman of both the Golden Gate Section of ASNE and the Northern California Section of SNAME.

Andres Cannavo

Andres is manager of the Electrical engineering section of AMSEC LLC, M. Rosenblatt & Son Group, Western Division. With over a decade of maritime engineering experience, his experience prior to joining the M. Rosenblatt & Son Group of AMSEC consisted of engineering and directing engineering projects for his family's Diques Cannavo Shipyard, C.A. Cumana, Sucre, Venezuela, and for Brooks / PRI Automation. He has B.S.E degrees in Electrical Engineering and Naval Architecture / Marine Engineering. He also has an M.S.E. degree from the University of Michigan in Naval Architecture / Marine Engineering.

Edward Lortz

Before retiring, Ed spent 31 years in the maritime industry. He worked for Gibbs & Cox, Electric Boat, St. Louis Ship, and Morris Guralnick in San Francisco. He served in the US Navy and his last two posts were with the US Army Corps of Engineers in New York, and the US Coast Guard at MLC Pacific, Naval Engineering Division in Alameda, California. He is a past vice chairman, treasurer, and secretary of the Golden Gate Section of ASNE.

Steve Halpern

Steve, now retired, spent 45 years in the marine design industry, a few years with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on submarine design, the remainder with M. Rosenblatt and Son on all types and classes of vessels. He is a past chairman of the Northern California Section of SNAME and the Golden Gate Section of ASNE.
