Title: An Overview of the Use of Thermoplastic Compounds

Abstract:

Plastic technology has been making its way into the marine industry; plastics are now used everywhere from electrical equipment to piping. When new technology has been introduced into the industry, it takes time before the industry can catch up; new regulations and interpretations to existing regulations must be developed to help ensure the safety of the vessels using these technologies.

Thermoplastic piping has been increasingly used in the ship and offshore industries; some thermoplastic piping has passed all requirements from IMO and the USCG. However, the navy requires shock testing for all piping that goes aboard combat vessels; as of now, no thermoplastic has been subjected to the shock testing required. This paper reviews existing regulations and how some thermoplastics meet or exceed these regulations. In addition, the properties of high performance CPVC will be described and applicable systems addressed with an emphasis on Navy combat vessels.
