For exceptional service in the sequence of research and development of structural materials which have significantly advanced the deep ocean capability of the Navy. As Head of the Ship Materials, Structures, and Ocean Technology Branch of the Naval Ship Systems Command and as Element Administrator for the Navy Materials Exploratory Development Program, Mr. Sorkin has effectively combined his personal technical knowledge, management skill, leadership ability, and outstanding judgment in formulating and directing major materials research and development programs for submarine construction.
With perseverance and dedication, he has advanced, by many years, the utilization of high strength-to-weight ratio materials as structural elements in submersibles for both military and scientific applications. Mr. Sorkin has personally succeeded in bringing HY-130 steel to the advanced development stage and through his efforts the pressure sphere for ALVIN, now being constructed, is of titanium. These outstanding achievements in research and development uniquely qualify Mr. George Sorkin to receive the ASNE Solberg Award for 1970.
