MegaRust 2020 is scheduled to proceed as planned with safety as a top priority for all members and attendees. The American Society of Naval Engineers is monitoring and is in contact with federal, state and local authorities with respect to the health and safety concerns surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19). We follow and encourage the use of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for prevention: https://www.cdc.gov.

We will continue to update this page with information as necessary. We look forward to seeing you in San Diego, and thank you for your continued partnership and attendance!

MegaRust 2020 is scheduled for July 28-30 at the San Diego Marriott Mission Valley.

MegaRust is conducted annually to provide a consolidated focus on Navy corrosion issues. Corrosion is a major factor in the readiness and total ownership cost of naval systems and this conference is intended to provide updated information on programs, policies, standards and Fleet experience related to corrosion and to promote discussion and sharing of information on technologies and strategies for controlling corrosion.

The conference provides an impartial forum for dialogue between government and commercial organizations, and providers of coatings and corrosion control products, processes, technologies and solutions. Participants include representatives from military, industry, and government organizations involved with research and development, design, engineering, construction, maintenance, modernization and operation of naval systems that are potentially affected by corrosion. The conference covers all segments of the naval services including sea, air, Marine Corps, vehicles, and facilities.

“New Technologies are sometimes difficult to introduce to DoD, MegaRust and ASNE have created a platform for businesses from other industries to come together with the DOD to share information on corrosion and best work practices. In May 2018 VSM Group arrived in San Diego to our first MegaRust feeling skeptical about attending. Two hours after our arrival we engaged in in-depth conversations and meetings with key stakeholders of the US Navy and DOD. One month after attending MegaRust VSM Group was conducting its very first demo for the US Navy and in 2019 we have traveled to several Navy installations conducting demos and inspections. The methods used by MegaRust and ASNE staff to bring companies and like-minded individuals together in the same room gave our company the products exposure and created an interest within all attending participants and the DOD which to us, was immeasurable.“ - Paul Townsend and Walter Hudson III, VSM Group, LLC.

MegaRust Mid-Year Review

The MegaRust Mid-Year Review was held again at SSPC’s Coatings+ 2020 in Long Beach, California. It was well attended by over 35-members of the naval coating’s community, from NAVSEA to QP5 Certified contractors. The session began with a brief review of last year’s event and some key take a including; “great setting,” “excellent technical sessions,” and some things such as “venue limited ease of access for participants and exhibitors.” The meeting then went on to feature discussions and updates from; NSRP’s Surface Preparations and Coatings Panel Chair, Mr. Arcino Quiero, Corrosion Community of Practice Process Master, Mr. Larry Bowden, and a spirited conversation with NAVSEA 05 Technical Warrant Holder, Mark Ingle and Engineering Manager Corrosion and Coatings Control, Mr. Howard Castle. All of whom will be featured participants in this year’s MegaRust 2020. The session concluded with a discussion of this year’s agenda, venue, hotel rates, and thoughts of future venues such as a larger Convention Center setting.

Thank you to all that attended and participated and to SSPC Coatings+ 2020 for their hospitality in hosting the MegaRust 2020 mid-year review. See you all in San Diego in May!

Reducing Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Costs Through the Proper Use of Welding Engineering

Welding engineering is often underutilized during ship construction, leading to inefficiencies, production errors and increased life cycle costs. Navy Vessels are enormous structures that house large complex weapons, propulsion systems, and personnel dedicated to the defense of our nation. Due to their extensive size, welding is a critical process in the production of these massive structures. Properly engineering welds is an interdisciplinary process that must incorporate many different engineering disciplines. Knowledge of chemistry, material science, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, manufacturing optimization and mechanics, along with their interaction, are all critical in order to have a complete understanding of the materials joining process. This knowledge then must be integrated into welding design, materials selection, welding processing, and testing plans to ensure the implemented welds perform to their desired specification. Increased utilization of proper welding engineering concepts can increase productivity, reduce bottle necks, and prevent welding failures that drive up shipbuilding and ship maintenance costs.
