Fellow ASNE Flagship Members,
Just in case you missed the news and advertisements, we wanted to be sure that you were aware that SAIL250 Maryland and Air Show starts this Wednesday in Baltimore and runs 24-30 June. Baltimore is one of only five seaports that will participate in this historic celebration. The following is from the SAIL250 website:
“Sail250® is a global gathering of tall ships and military ships to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the founding of the United States. It will offer crews, cadets, and visitors from all over the world an unforgettable experience and a world-class maritime celebration.”
This will be “Fleet Week” on steroids, with fun for the whole family! We here in the DC Metro Area are fortunate that our own port of Baltimore was chosen as one of the sites.
You can find out all about it here - Sail250 Maryland & Airshow Baltimore | Official Site - but as naval engineers, we wanted you to be aware that several US and foreign flag military vessels are participating. Specifically, the following vessels are visiting and will be open to the public during the times listed on the website:
- USCGC EAGLE (The Coast Guard Academy’s sailing training ship)
- USS ARLINGTON (LPD 24)
- USS MARINETTE (LCS 25)
- HMCS WILLIAM HALL (P433) (One of the Royal Canadian Navy’s new Arctic and Offshore Support Vessels (AOPV). (Note: We are working with the Canadian Naval Attaché to see if we can arrange a special tour just for Flagship members. Stay tuned.)
Because so many ships are involved, they are not all going to be moored at the Inner Harbor. However, the website has maps showing all the ship locations.
The SAIL250® Baltimore Airshow will take place from Noon to 4PM Saturday and Sunday, 27 June, and 28 June, respectively. Friday, 26 June is a practice day. Good viewing sites are listed on the website.
While there are many events during the week, we particularly note the following exhibition about the history of the US Navy listed in the Schedule of Events on the website that opens on Wednesday, 24 June:
- Exhibit at Baltimore Visitor Center: "Navy 250: The Legacy,” a celebration of the sailor through the storied 250-year history of the United States Navy. Through historic artifacts, a cutting-edge theater experience, an award-winning interactive, and their own words, sailors’ stories from 1775 through today are brought to life, time and time again showcasing how ordinary individuals have risen to meet the moment in extraordinary times.”
We hope that you will be able to take advantage of this historic opportunity. Furthermore, we will let you know if we are able to arrange the HMCS WILLIAM HALL special tour.
Enjoy this spectacular beginning of summer!
Regards,
Ike
