ASNE Volunteer Spotlight

Mr. Andy Vasquez, Corrosion Control Manager
NAVSEA21 AC/Alion Science and Technology

How did you first get involved with FMMS?
I became involved in ASNE in 2002, with the late Admiral Dave Donohue, who instilled in me the importance of the role of the ASNE, and what it meant to industry. Admiral Donohue taught me to do it right the first time and not wrong six times, document it, and always learn to improve it. I was able to understand the impact, and complexity of FMMS, as well as see some of the new technology.

What are some of the other volunteer roles you have held within ASNE?
I have held many roles from committee member to committee chair and from ASNE member to chair.

What do you enjoy most about being an ASNE volunteer?
Being an ASNE volunteer, you learn that really great things can happen when combine the many diverse talents of ASNE as a group, while sharing information. Being a part of a great knowledge-based program can show you anything can be done.

What words of wisdom do you have for someone thinking about volunteering?
Start at the bottom, and work your way up, so you always appreciate those members who helped you along the way.

What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time...wow, with 7 grandchildren there really isn't spare time, just planned events. From building model steam engines, designing railroad tracks for the kids, and motorcycle hare scramble racing, there really isn't much spare time. As a Corrosion Control Manager for the Navy, finding better ways to combat corrosion, and ASNE has helped me learn, and meet those companies who have some of the solution ship to win the war on corrosion.
