Hello from Hampton

The 2016 Fleet Maintenance and Modernization Symposium is in full swing in Hampton, VA. 1,000 of the finest fleet maintenance and modernization engineers have been sharing knowledge in technical tracks, showcasing products on the exhibit hall floor, and discussing current high-level Navy and Coast Guard needs with keynotes and panels. A few photo highlights are below.

It's not too late to join in on the action. On-site registration is available, and exhibit hall access is free.

Welcome to FMMS

Exhibit Hall

"The innovation theater in the back of the exhibit hall was a hit, with well attended presentations by floor speakers, exhibitor training topics, and a historical presentation from the Mariners Museum [pictured]."—Dave Zilber

ODU Students — faculty advisor Prof. Tony Dean stated "We are very happy to be here and the response we've received from ASNE for our ONR sponsored project for veterans has been overwhelming."

USCG Boats — a highlight of the symposium according to ASNE President RADM Tony Lengerich, USN (Ret.)

The Day 2 agenda includes a keynote by RDLM William Galinis, USN; PEO Ships, 8 technical papers, surface/submarine/carrier maintenance town halls, a Multi-Service Flag panel, and an Industry-Government panel. The Multi-Service Flag Panel, moderated by RADM Jeff Brooks, USN (Ret.) will focus upon "Maintenance Investments Today That Will Produce Enduring Operational Availability." Panelists include:

  • RADM Bruce Baffer, USCG; Assistant Commandant for Engineering and Logistics
  • RADM Mark Whitney, USN; Director, Fleet Maintenance, Fleet Forces Command
  • RDML James Downey, USN; Commander, Naval Regional Maintenance Center
  • RDML William Galinis, USN; PEO Ships
  • RDML Stephen Williamson, USN; Commander Pacific Fleet (N43)
  • Ms. Zina Kozak-Zachary; Product Director, Army Watercraft

Have a good answer to the question: "Where should government and industry invest today to improve ship repair schedule and cost performance in the future?" Join in on the conversation at the Industry-Government Panel moderated by CAPT Bob Perry, USN (Ret.) with speakers:

  • Mr. Tim Claus; Chief, Watercraft Inspection Branch
  • CAPT Douglas Schofield, USCG; Commander Surface Forces Logistics Center
  • Mr. Chuck Baker; MARMC Waterfront Operations Manager
  • Mr. Dave Thomas; VP, GM BAE Systems, Norfolk Ship Repair
  • Mr. Kevin Terry; General Manager, NASSCO-Norfolk
  • Mr. Chris Miner; VP, In-Service Aircraft Carriers HII-NNS

Last, but certainly not least, FMMS will wrap up with the professional development course Shipbuilding & Ship Repair Business Management: Part II. This course surveys the forces, factors and risk considerations internal to a specific shipbuilding or ship repair company that create this business environment: management methods, program control considerations, cross-functional integration. Part I received rave reviews from attendees, most of whom are returning to attend Part II. Part I is not a pre-requisite for Part II however, so you can still enroll on-site!
