Title: Power generation trade off analysis for new build all-electric icebreakers

Abstract:

This study addresses multiple combinations possible for power generation solutions aboard heavy ice breakers. While electric heavy ice breakers are proven technology, advances in gas turbine, diesel engine, electric motor, and power system technologies since the construction of the USCG Polar class provide great opportunities for simplification, increased reliability and increased efficiency. Based on the options outlined below and likely operational profiles this trade study considers a broad spectrum of factors that include physical & functional integration aspects, maintenance & manning, reliability & overall system efficiency, and acquisition costs.

• All DG Medium-Speed
• All DG High-Speed
• All DG Combination of Medium and High-Speed
• All GTA Combination of large and small turbines
• Combination of large GTA and medium-speed DGs
