FMMS - A Fleet Maintenance Resource

On the fence about attending the 2016 Fleet Maintenance and Modernization Symposium? We recently rediscovered this gem of an article by Douglas Denzine, Norfolk Ship Support Activity Public Affairs highlighting Norfolk Ship Support Activity (NSSA) involvement in FMMS 2014. ASNE Executive Director Emeritus Dennis Kruse puts it perfectly where he's quoted saying "This is a great opportunity. There really aren't many other places you can go where you can talk to this many technical experts at once and get so many different perspectives on complications that exist on ships." Register now to solidify your place in FMMS 2016.

Launch and Recovery Symposium

We are pleased to announce that RADM John Neagley, Program Executive Officer Littoral Combat Ships, has been confirmed as a keynote speaker for the 2016 Launch and Recovery Symposium. The scope of the 2016 Launch and Recovery Symposium includes the launch and recovery systems, the host marine platforms, and the vehicles themselves-all of which are evolving at a rapid pace. This is an area of intense research and development in national and international naval, commercial, and academic sectors. This year's program looks to have the strongest collection of aviation-track papers in the history of the event. Join us in Linthicum Heights, Maryland, November 16-17.

Volunteer Spotlight

Scott Hepburn, of Hepburn and Sons LLC recently completed a tour as the ASNE Flagship Section chair and has agreed to step into the role of National Sections and Regions Committee chair. Scott's past volunteer roles have included Flagship section vice chair and secretary, as well as serving on the Scholarship committee. Scott is relieving Marty Oard who has served the society diligently as Sections committee chairman for 5 years. Thank you both for your support.

We caught up with Scott recently to learn more about how he's come to be such a devoted ASNE leader. Here's what he had to say:

  • How did you get involved in ASNE? My family has been actively involved with ASNE for over 40 years. When we started a maritime business six years ago, I immediately became very active in the Flagship section. I have enjoyed my various roles as Flagship Section Secretary, Vice Chair, then finally Chairman. Now I am honored to have been recently appointed the National Section Chairman.
  • What’s your favorite ASNE event? ASNE Day has always been my favorite event. This is a time each year where I get to meet up with all my friends, colleagues, and customers from around the industry. In three days I have a whole years’ worth of “water cooler” conversations!
  • Why do you choose to volunteer? I volunteer frankly because it is so valuable to our business. ASNE is the most efficient way for me to train on the latest Naval Engineering topics, meet senior Navy and industry decision makers, and garner the latest business intelligence. No other organization or conferences offer me all of these benefits under one membership.
  • If you could spend a week at sea on any vessel in the fleet, which one would it be? The DDG 51 is the workhorse of the Navy’s fleet. This highly capable, multi-mission ship this would easily be my first choice. Although that may be the Navy brat in my talking since my dad, CAPT Rick Hepburn USN (Ret) was responsible for overseeing construction of these ships as Supervisor of Shipbuilding in Bath from 1998-2001.
