Launch and Recovery

Theme: Operational Lessons Learned and Designing for Safe and Effective Operability, Regulatory Conformance, and Affordability

November 16-17, 2016

Location: MITAGS, 692 Maritime Boulevard, Linthicum Heights, MD 21090

ASNE's Launch and Recovery Symposium 2016 will feature an excellent mix of quality technical presentations, keynote speakers and panel discussions. Morning and lunchtime Keynote speakers include RADM John Neagley, USN, Program Executive Officer Littoral Combat Ships, RADM Bruce Baffer, USCG, Chief Engineer of the Coast Guard, Mr. Jaap Gelling, Damen Shipyards, and CAPT Jeffrey Dodge, NAVAIR. RADM Baffer will also lead a Panel Discussion on Launch and Recovery Operations featuring Commander K.H. Suurveld, Dutch Navy, Dr. Robert Ernst, NAVAIR, and BOSN3 Ian Christian, USCG. A second Panel Discussion on Launch and Recovery Performance Prediction will present some very interesting developments in the area of modeling and simulation, with panel members Dr. Brandt Savander, Maritime Research Associates, Dr. Len Imas, Stevens Institute of Technology and Dr. Nicolas Carette, MARIN.

The 2016 ASNE Launch and Recovery Symposium will feature a vast array of technical presentations related to the launch and recovery of air, surface, and subsurface vehicles from surface ships. Topics include, but are not limited to, naval ship design criteria for launch and recovery, analysis of dynamic interfaces between ship and aircraft air wakes, deck motion characteristics for aircraft recovery, small boat motion prediction and its impact on L&R from the mother ship, surface to subsurface communication techniques, and Human Systems Integration in the design of L&R equipment operator consoles. Both physical testing and modeling and simulation are represented in some capacity throughout the presentations. With the breadth of subject matters and variety of analytical approaches, there is sure to be something of interest for any attendee who is looking for maritime launch and recovery information. The technical paper tracks have been published, with abstracts available via the symposium website.

Location: MITAGS, 692 Maritime Boulevard, Linthicum Heights, MD 21090

What led to your interest in combat systems (specific event or moment)?

Event: USS Mobile Bay (CG-53) Underwater Explosion Shock Trials

I've been interested in aerospace technology since running a weather satellite tracking station while on active duty in the US Navy. Upon separation from the Navy, I enrolled in Florida Institute of Technology to study Space Technology, finishing with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Combat Systems Engineering allows me to leverage the Computer Science, Aerodynamics and Mechanical Engineering principles learned while getting my bachelor’s degree. So, while working in Naval Sea Systems Command Aegis (PMS-400), I led the team conducting USS Mobile Bay (CG-53) Underwater Explosion Shock Trials and had to review and approve the Shock Trials Plan, prepare daily reports, plus I was heavily involved in writing the Shock Trials Report. These activities gave me a good knowledge base in the AEGIS Combat System and peaked my interest enough to apply for a position in Combat System Engineering.

What is a fun fact that most people don’t know about you?

I love vintage automobiles, including a 1968 Volkswagen Convertible and a 1930 Ford Model A which I own.

What’s your favorite boat/ship/naval movie?

Tora, Tora, Tora

What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?

Satisfaction - Rolling Stones

Groovin - Young Rascals

Blue Eyes - Elton John

I Feel Good - James Brown

Green Onions - Booker T and The MGs
