ASNE-San Diego Section Event: The Anti–Submarine Warfare (ASW) Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) project seeks to lay the technical foundation for an entirely new class of ocean–going vessel—one able to traverse thousands of kilometers over the open seas for months at a time, without a single crew member aboard. A wide variety of potential missions include submarine tracking and mine countermeasures (MCM). DARPA developed a medium displacement unmanned surface vessel (USV), christened Sea Hunter, with ocean–spanning range, months of endurance, and substantial payload capacity. Design goals include:
• Greater than 10,000–nmi range at economical transit speed; 70–day mission
• High level of autonomy for independent operations under sparse supervisory control, including autonomous compliance with the regulations for preventing collisions at sea (COLREGS)
