Navy Vessels are enormous structures that house large complex weapons, propulsion systems, and personnel dedicated to the defense of our nation. Due to their extensive size, welding is a critical process in the production of these massive structures. Properly engineering welds is an interdisciplinary process that must incorporate many different engineering disciplines. Knowledge of chemistry, material science, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, kinetics, heat transfer, and mechanics, along with their interaction, are all critical in order to have a complete understanding of the materials joining process. This knowledge then must be integrated into welding design, materials selection, welding processing, and testing plans to ensure the implemented welds perform to their desired specification. Welding engineering is often underutilized during ship construction, leading to inefficiencies and production errors. Increased utilization of welding engineering can increase productivity, reduce bottle necks, and prevent the welding failures that drive up shipbuilding costs.

Dr. Daniel Foster is the Principal Engineer at Expert Engineering and Education in Norfolk, VA. Expert Engineering and Education is a Workforce Development and Welding Engineering company that focuses on the development of engineers and technicians as well as welding engineering solutions for the marine industry.
Dr. Foster earned his BS, MS, and PhD in Welding Engineering from The Ohio State University’s Department of Material Science and Engineering. After graduating, Daniel spent many years as an Engineering Professor while also performing welding engineer consulting for aerospace, and marine organizations.
Strongly dedicated to his craft, Dr. Foster has earned multiple certifications related to fields of welding engineering and inspection. These certifications include Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), Certified Welding Educator (CWE), Certified Welding Supervisor (CWS), Certified Welding Engineer (CWEng), Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), Non-Destructive Testing III (NDT III), and Project Management Professional (PMP).
Dr. Daniel Foster has been published in numerous scientific journals and has provided reviews for many scientific journal publications. He actively presents at multiple engineering conferences every year and has provided invited talks at large government agencies such as the Air Force Research Lab, NASA, and the Navy's National Shipbuilding Research Program. In addition, Daniel has secured and managed several contracts from the Navy, NASA, and the National Science Foundation, while also providing welding engineering solutions for private industry.
