ASNE Day 2016 - Technical Paper Session 4 : Thursday, March 3, 2016 1100-1230

Additive Manufacturing

Author: Mike Kopec

Title: 3D printing for today's engineer

The Prism Engineering paper and presentation on Additive Manufacturing will cover the two most common technologies used in 3D printing: Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and PolyJet. It will begin with an explanation of how each technology works to produce a finished part, followed by a comparison of their strengths and weaknesses, and the requirements with each for post-processing parts. The different material options available for technology will also be covered.

Next, the common uses of 3D printing will be discussed starting with Rapid Prototyping. The time, money, and labor saved by using 3D printing during the design and testing process will be gone over. This will be followed by Manufacturing Applications including jigs and fixtures, production line testing, equipment calibration, molding validation, and manufacturing end-use parts. Finally, other Tooling Applications such as vacuum forming, injection molding, sand casting, silicone/epoxy molding, and sheet metal forming will be covered.

During the presentation portion, we will provide a variety of actual 3D printed parts from both technologies that demonstrate a wide range of applications, and attendees will be given the opportunity to ask questions specific to their individual needs.
